MARCH 2025
We’re thrilled to celebrate the launch of the CHILI Hub (Child and adolescent Health Impacts of Learning Indoor environments under net zero), led by Professor Pia Hardelid (UCL), as part of the £42M NIHR and UKRI investment into research ensuring health is central to net zero strategies.
Schools and nurseries contribute 15% of carbon emissions from public buildings in the UK. Making them more energy-efficient is key to meeting net zero targets, however airtight buildings can trap indoor air pollution and increase heat, potentially affecting children’s health and learning environments.
To investigate these impacts, the CHILI Hub will bring together experts from UCL, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Swansea University, UK Health Security Agency, University of Leeds, University of York and Imperial College London, to promote future educational spaces are both sustainable and healthy for children.
A huge congratulations to the team, including our very own Pia Hardelid!
